Internet connectivity continues to pose a persistent challenge in Pakistan, even a week after the conclusion of the general elections. X, formerly known as Twitter, has been inaccessible in the country for over 36 hours now following revelations by the commissioner of Rawalpindi regarding election manipulation. The outage began on February 17th at approximately 10 pm local time and briefly resumed normal functionality for 30 minutes yesterday before relapsing into unavailability, which persists to this day.

Commissioner Liaqat Ali Chattha of Rawalpindi announced his intention to surrender to authorities on Saturday, confessing his involvement in electoral tampering. He admitted to personally overseeing the alteration of 70,000 votes, stating, “We converted the losers into winners.”

According to the cyber security watchdog NetBlocks, X/Twitter has been restricted in Pakistan for a continuous period of 24 hours, marking the latest in a series of nationwide outages.

The website outage tracker Downdetector has recorded numerous X outages across the country, affecting both the app and website. Users have reported difficulties loading posts on the platform, with some unable to access any web pages at all.

Pakistan has experienced frequent disruptions to internet and social media platforms in recent months, particularly following the 2024 general election. Users expressed frustration on Saturday night over the prolonged unavailability of X.

Furthermore, last month saw disturbances on various platforms including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Google services, and the internet service provider PTCL. Despite this, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has remained silent, refraining from issuing any official statements on the matter.
